Tainan Only Taiwanese City Ranked in British Magazine's 2025 Best Asian Destinations List

Tainan was selected as the 4th best destination in Asia for 2025 by the renowned British cultural magazine Time Out. It is the only Taiwanese city to make their list.

Time Out revealed its 2025 list of Best Asian Destinations, which was voted on by local editors and travel writers across Asia. The final list includes eight cities or islands from various countries, with Tainan being the only city from Taiwan to be featured. The top three listed are Sumba Island in Indonesia, Siargao Island in the Philippines, and Da Nang in Vietnam.

The magazine described Tainan as Taiwan's oldest city and former capital, often hailed as the country's food capital. It is a beloved city in the south with a warm climate, boasting not only rich history and culture but also avant-garde art, trendy bars, and mouthwatering cuisine. The article also encourages tourists to sample the famous Anping douhua (tofu pudding), explore century-old monuments like the Anping Tree House, and participate in the International Dragon Boat Championship, which will be held in May 2025.

Adding to the recognition as one of the best destinations in Asia, Tainan City Government pointed out that Tainan was also listed in National Geographic Traveler's 2024 World's 30 Coolest Places and CNN's 2024 World's 24 Best Places to Visit. These mentions highlight the city's cultural heritage and culinary traditions, which continue to attract tourists from around the world for in-depth travel experiences.

Germany’s Tagesspiegel recently published a report analyzing ideal relocation destinations amidst the rise of far-right politics in Europe. Taiwan stood out as one of the top choices for its stable democracy, low crime rate, well-developed infrastructure, and welcoming visa policies for skilled professionals.In an article titled Europe Shifts Right: Four Countries Worth Relocating To (Rechtsruck in Europa: Vier Länder, in die man sinnvoll auswandern kann), published on February 1, Tagesspiegel explored migration options in response to the increasing influence of far-right political parties across Europe.The report noted that in recent years, far-right parties advocating stricter immigration policies have gained momentum in several European nations. From Germany’s Alternative for Germany to France’s National Rally and Italy’s Brothers of Italy, these parties are reshaping the political landscape. Even Finland and Sweden have seen a shift toward right-wing policies, narrowing immigration opportunities in democratic countries.Amid this trend, Tagesspiegel highlighted Iceland, Canada, Uruguay, and Taiwan as top relocation choices that remain open and stable. Tainan one of CNN Travel’s top 24 best places to visit in 2024

Tainan City in southern Taiwan is recognized by CNN Travel as one of the 24 places tourists should consider while making their 2024 travel plans.In an article by the Atlanta-based Cable News Network entitled “Where to go in 2024: The best places to visit,” Tainan is described as a hot spot on the international stage. As Taiwan’s ancient capital prepares to celebrate its 400th anniversary this year, it has surpassed its modern counterpart, Taipei City, in terms of hotel occupancy rates over the past two years.Otherworldly natural landscapes like Caoshan Moon World, scenic sunsets over salt farms, colorful old temples, cool new museums and flavorful street food such as oyster omelets all factored into CNN Travel’s decision to call out Tainan as something special. The article added that the southern city was also listed among Booking.com’s top 10 sustainable tourism destinations in 2023.According to the municipal government, the U.K. edition of National Geographic Traveller also featured the city on “The Cool List 2024” for its historic architecture and distinctive snacks. Mayor Huang Wei-che welcomed the news, saying that such honors are a seal of approval of the efforts by the local government and citizens in promoting Taiwan’s oldest city.The mayor added that his government is doing everything it can to make Tainan more accessible to tourists from around the world.
